Coach Esau’s basketball journey began in the charismatic city of Baltimore Maryland where he grew up competing against some of America’s best talent such as NBA players Juan Dixon (Washington Wizards) Mark Karcher (76ers) Kevin Braswell (San Antonio Spurs). His on-court success as a player earned him a basketball scholarship at Harford Community College located in Aberdeen Maryland. Due to injury, he was unable to continue playing but never lost his passion for the game of basketball.
Due to his career-ending injury Coach Esau turned to coaching in 2002 and has been doing so ever since. He has over 15 years experience coaching youth basketball in USA, Middle East and Africa. His diverse coaching background covers the development of players of all age groups with an emphasis on developing high school, college, and professional basketball players.
Coach Esau’s first coaching opportunity was as a volunteer coach for a local youth AAU team in his home town Baltimore in 2002. His boys under-14 team went undefeated in the Baltimore AAU circuit earning the team an opportunity to compete for a national championship that was held in Orlando Florida. In 2004 Coach Esau moved to the United Arab Emirates where he continued to coach youth basketball with various programs basketball programs as well as providing basketball consulting services from time to time. Some of the players he assisted in developing during his UAE coaching years include Hasan Atiya (University of Hartford) Ahmed Ismail (University of Manhattan).
In 2007-2009 Coach Esau was tasked with the responsibility of supporting the development of the professional basketball players at Sharjah Sports. In 2014, he was instrumental to the organization of UAE’s first American high school invitational tournament. The event hosted a plethora of future NBA talent including Frank Jackson (New Orleans Pelicans), Thomas Bryant (Washington Wizards), and Zach Norvell (LA Lakers).
In 2015 Coach Esau's under-14 Dubai team traveled to California, USA to compete in the SWOOSH Basketball tournament in Orange County, California. He organized multiple university tours during the trip for his players including visits to the University of Southern California, UCLA, Loyola Marymount, and the University of California Northridge.
In 2016 he traveled to Khartoum Sudan to scout and train basketball athletes who displayed great potential for development. One of his success stories during his time in Sudan is 7-foot Moses Bol who is currently attending the University of Central Florida on a basketball scholarship.
Coach Esau is Baltimore basketball. He is passionate about developing the youth to give them the same opportunities he received as a player. His style of coaching is a mix of discipline and intensity. He loves watching players continue to break down barriers and build bright futures for themselves.
